Jane Shibata is a graphic designer, college professor, published colored pencil artist, President of the Los Angeles Colored Pencil Society, and calligraphy instructor. For two full days, January 13 & 14, 2018, we had the privilege of having Jane share her knowledge and expertise with the 18 of us that attended her Spice it up! with Colored Pencils workshop. Our class was held at the upscale, elegant and warm surroundings of Casa de Reiter (many thanks to Diane and Steve).

Jane gave each of us a folder filled with lots of eye candy references and then shared examples and did demonstrations for each of the colored pencil techniques she taught. We discussed the different types and brands of colored pencils on the market, solvents, various papers and fixatives. The objective of the class was to have us all leave with a large variety of new ways to add interesting color techniques to our lettering. I can personally say that her mission was accomplished.

Jane is very accomplished in many fields, she is a kind and giving person, and she is quite the perfectionist. When referring to her work it affectionately has been said that “Jane made a mistake...once.”
